The Grip Weeds rejuvenate a modern classic

The Grip Weeds' universe was expanding rapidly when they began work on their third LP in the summer of 1999. After establishing themselves as modern classicists and critical darlings with their first two albums and a series of blistering live performances, the first batch of Grip Weeds songs for the new millennium would reflect the personal metamorphosis the band members were undergoing.

During the sessions for Summer of a Thousand Years`, their third album, lead guitarist/singer Kristin Pinell married singer/drummer Kurt Reil, and singer/guitarist Rick Reil and his wife Ivey welcomed their daughter, Violet. This tsunami of positive energy flowing through the band reflected in the vibrant, cautiously hopeful Summer of a Thousand Years album that was released under the cloud of 9/11.

After baking the tapes and diving back into the original album sessions, the band found a treasure chest of sonic surprises.

"At the time of its initial release, Summer of a Thousand Years was only available on CD," said Kurt Reil. "Since this deluxe edition would be available on vinyl, we decided this was a good time to revisit the two-inch master tapes and remix the entire album. The vinyl format also drove us to re-sequence the record and add bonus tracks to make up the fourth side, expanding the scope of the original release.? The new version of the album now stands at over 73 minutes of music, spread over two vinyl albums or jam-packed onto one CD.

The band and studio has produced so much music in the last quarter century which gave them production skills and experience they have now turned onto Summer Of A Thousand Years Anniversary Edition. "It's the same recording but we find this new mix to be much more compelling and textural than the original version? we?ve had 25 years to live with the album,? Reil said.

Summer of a Thousand Years features many Grip Weeds classics that have been featured in their live set for decades: 'Love's Lost On You', 'Save My Life', 'Future Move', 'Life and Love, Time To Come', and quite possibly the greatest Who cover ever in 'Melancholia'.

For fans of this album, this new remix gives them a chance to hear the album again for the first time.
