THE GRIP WEEDS
HOUSE OF VIBES REVISITED
(Ground Up)

New Jersey psych-rockers The Grip Weeds have remastered and expanded their 1994 debut House of Vibes. As the album's title implies, the band jumped the home recording trend by converting a residence into its private recording universe, immersing themselves in sonic experimentation. "Out of Today" charges forward with chugging, almost metallic rhythm. The song is sweetened by close harmonies influenced by classic 60's groups like The Byrds and The Mamas and The Papas. The chime and crunch of "Salad Days" recalls the Sabbath-meets-Beatles amalgam of "Only a Memory" from fellow Jersey natives and genre-miners the Smithereens. Ghosts of The Move and Sell Out-era Who echo through "Close Descending Love" and "Before I Close My Eyes." In addition to lead guitar duties, Kristin Pinell adds flute to the trippy self-exploration of "Realise." (www.gripweeds.com)
